Welcome to
Just Math Facts!
This is a no frills math facts drill app that the developer hopes you will find helpful. It is designed for teachers, especially those who work with struggling students. But any teacher or parent working with a student learning the basic facts should find it useful.
It is designed to start off with the easy-to-master facts and build on success.
Student only sees correct answer: As you will see the student can not proceed until a correct answer is entered. If an incorrect digit is touched it will be recorded as an incorrect answer and the correct answer will be displayed for about 4 seconds and then disappear. Then the student can answer correctly and move on to the next problem.
Automatic Advancement Built-in: when a student scores 100% the student record automatically advances to the next level in that type of drill (for some drills, notably those that only have ten answers, the student must complete three drills at 100% during a particular session in order to advance) or to the next type of drill where appropriate. The student can start at the increased level the next time on the app or they are given the option of continuing at that new level immediately.
Here is how to use the app:
Go to Student Records and press the '+' to enter the name of a new student; continue to add other students as needed.\n When you add a new student to the list their record is created with addition as the operation, 0 as the Selected Number and In-order as the type of drill.\n Choose a student and edit the drill options. Below you will find a brief description of those options.
Operations: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication or Division. (As you will see below if you choose Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Pairs, Pairs Random, Squares, or Squares Random as the Type of Drill those are special cases that over-ride any selection made here.)
Selected Number: allows you to select a single number to work on or, in the case of where you choose review as the Type of Drill, a range - which will consist of the selected number and the two numbers below that
Type of Drill: allows you to select from the following:
In-Order: presents each number from 0 thru 9 in order. For example if Selected Number is 8 and the Operation is multiplication the first problem would be 8 X 0, and the last problem would be 8 X 9.
Random: presents 10 problems using each of the digits 0 thru 9 but presented in random order.
Review: presents 30 problems in random order over a range from the Selected Number and the two numbers below it. For example if the operation were addition and the Selected Number 3, then combinations 1 + 0 continuing through to 3 + 9 would be presented in random order.
Review All: In-Order: reviews all the combinations in order from 0 + 0, 0 + 1, ... to 8 + 9, 9 + 9 (a total of 55 problems for the operations of addition or multiplication - since 2 + 5 and 5 + 2 are the same only one set is presented. With subtraction, however 7 - 2 is not the same as 7 - 5 so both problems are presented resulting in 100 problems. Division is similar but there are less problems, 81, since division of or by 0 is avoided.).
Review All: Random: presents the same 55, 100, or 81 problems as above except that they are in random order.
Pairs: add each of the numbers to itself in order from 0 + 0 to 9 + 9.
Pairs Random: add each number to itself. All ten problems are presented in random order.
Squares: multiply each number by itself in order from 0 to 9.
Squares Random: each number multiplied by itself but presented in random order.
Addition and Subtraction: Similar to the In-order Type of Drill above, each number is added to the selected number, then when the correct sum is entered the selected number is subtracted from the sum. For example, if the selected number is 3 the student would be presented in order, 3 + 0, then 3 - 3, 3 - 0 and so on with the last two problems 3 + 9, 12 - 3, 12 - 9 for a total of 30 problems.
Multiplication and Division: is similar to Addition and Subtraction except that 0 is avoided resulting in 27 problems total.
Presentation Orientation: problems can be presented Vertically, Horizontally, or Randomly switch between the two. (Division problems are always presented horizontally.)

Sequence chart for Automatic Advancement feature
The app is designed with multiple choices for Type-of-Drill. Each choice can be completed by a student as a single drill. OR, the app will continue to advance based on the student’s performance. The following chart is intended to outline the criteria for advancement and the steps offered.
The app is set up to begin with addition with 0. Of course a student may be started anywhere in the following hierarchy according to needs or interests.
Begin with Operation: Addition
Selected Number: 0
Type Of Drill: In-Order
During a particular session the student must score 100% on each of three tries in order to advance. The Operation and Selected Number remain the same but the type of drill advances to Random.
Random works the same way. The student must score 100% three times during a session in order to advance. Then the operation remains the same but the Selected number advances by 1 and the Type Of Drill reverts to In-Order.
This pattern repeats itself until the selected number reaches 3. (Or if you elect for a student to start at any number 3 or above, it begins with what follows.)
When a student achieves 100% on three Random drills the Type Of Drill advances to Review. The student is presented with thirty problems 10 for the selected number and 10 each for one less and two less than the selected number. These thirty problems are presented randomly. For this exercise the student needs to score 91% or better on one drill to advance. Then Selected Number increases by 1 and Type Of Drill is In-Order.
This sequence continues until the selected number is 9. When the selected number is 9 and the student scores better than 90% the student advances to Review All Random.
If the student receives better than 90% in Review All Random Advancement moves from addition to subtraction, or from subtraction to multiplication, or from multiplication to division and this same sequence is repeated for that operation. (Note that division starts with 1 and there are only 9 problems per drill, 27 review questions and 81 Review All Random questions.)
Special Drills:
Add and Subtract drills begin with Selected Number 0 and work through all the addition combinations and the two inverses in order. If a student gets better than 90% correct on a drill the student advances to Add and Subtract with Selected Number 1. The patter is repeated until the student is successful with selected Number 9.
Multiply and Divide works the same way except that it starts with 1 and only 27 problems are presented for each drill.
Pairs and Squares is an interesting diversion. Presented in order Pairs In-Order when scores 100% advances to Pairs Random, which, when the student scores 100% goes to Squares In-Order, which then advances to Squares Random.
